A perfect storm of pressures facing the legal industry is forcing lawyers to pay attention to the practical realities of getting work more than ever before – and there isn’t just one key to success, says Toronto legal business development expert Jane Southren.
“Building the business that is your legal practice is not easy, fast or certain and, like everything else about our practice, there is no silver bullet that will give you the answer. It takes a lot of initiative, a lot of effort and a lot of time and not just at this stage, but throughout your career,” says Southren, director of professional business development at Lerners LLP.
While it is each lawyer’s job to identify the approaches that open the doors to build their unique business, Southren says there are some foundational principles that, when applied consistently, will increase the likelihood of career success, security, and satisfaction.
